City implements heat protocols Thursday

(WMC-TV) – Memphis officials are urging people to take precautions during the current heat wave.

“Last year, the community rallied around our ‘Check on 4 Door to Door’ initiative. We know that Memphians are some of the most caring people in the world, and we expect nothing less of them this year,” said Mayor A C Wharton, Jr. “Please, if you know of someone who doesn’t have air conditioning or who might be struggling with the heat, just stop by and see how they are doing.”

Outdated tornado sirens could do more harm than good

MEMPHIS, TN- (WMC-TV) – Tornado sirens are intended to warn us when a twister is eminent, but sirens in your neighborhood may sound during a storm even when there's real threat to that area. For most residents in Shelby County, the sirens sound county-wide, no matter where the twister is actually headed and history shows that may cause more harm, than good.

When a tornado hit Joplin, MO, it killed 160 people.

"We know for a fact people died because they didn't pay attention because the sirens go off all the time," said Action News 5 meteorologist Dave Brown.

It was the same story when deadly tornados ripped across Alabama last April.

In most counties, including the majority of Shelby County, anytime there is a tornado warning anywhere in the county, sirens sound all over.

"So the next time the sirens blow, people pay no attention and this happens over and over again," Brown said.

Peabody Duck Enjoy A Day In The Snow

Peabody Duck Enjoy A Day In The Snow

Snow fell over much of the Mid-South Wednesday morning leaving one to three inches of snow on grassy areas and rooftops.  One Memphis rooftop is home to the world famous Peabody Ducks.  They braved the cold and waddled through the snow on top of the Peabody Hotel in downtown Memphis as they made their way to the warmer waters of Peabody fountain in the hotel lobby.

Even though they are more at home treading water, the ducks took the snow in stride.
