Flooding knocks out TDOT highway cameras

Flooding knocks out TDOT highway cameras

Large chunks of the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s camera network in the Memphis area are the latest victims of the area’s flooding.

“Approximately 30 cameras on Interstates 40 and 55 are off-line at this time, with outages possibly lasting as long as three weeks,” said a TDOT spokesman in a written statement.

The SmartWay cameras have gone black because their power supply has been shut down to protect it from the rising Mississippi River.

Because of the high risk of flooding throughout county, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is asking citizens to observe the rules regarding road closures.

“The danger of flooding on roads and in neighborhoods is real and very dangerous”, said Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham. “We want to make sure that all of our citizens are aware and stay safe.”

TDOT crews plan lane closures on I-240

Mid-Southerners who thought road work on I-40 was causing a lot of problems won’t be happy to hear that TDOT has even more construction planned, but this time road crews have their sights set on I-240.

The nearly $42 million project will widen the highway to four lanes in all directions between 385 and Walnut Grove. It’s expected to take about two years.

Concrete, bridge repairs mean I-40 lanes closed

A pair of construction projects means drivers will have to deal with fewer lanes on Interstate 40 this weekend and next week.

Here are the details from the Tennessee Department of Transportation:

I-40 East over Sam Cooper Blvd.
Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. through 6 a.m. Wednesday, March 23
I-40 East will have two lanes closed and two lanes open.
Sam Cooper Blvd. will have one lane closed and one lane open.

I-40 East and West at the Davies Plantation overpass
Friday, March 18 at 8 p.m. through 5 a.m. Monday, March 21
One lane will remain open in each direction.
