MATA cuts fares over air quality concerns

MATA cuts fares over air quality concerns

You can help clean up the air and get a cheap trip on the bus today.

The Memphis-Shelby County Health Department issued an air quality alert due to concerns about high quantities of ozone in the atmosphere today. When that happens, MATA offers deep fare discounts on busses and trolleys.

“By offering 25 cent rides when a code orange is forecast, MATA hopes people will help reduce air pollution by riding the bus or trolley instead of driving their cars,” said Alison Burton, MATA’s marketing director.

Original equipment vs. aftermarket auto parts

Reliable and reputable Mid-South automotive sources will tell you:  when it comes to structural parts, the ones that contribute directly to the structural integrity of a vehicle, using aftermarket structural parts can be risky and dangerous (please read my investigation from last November by clicking here).

But aftermarket cosmetic parts, like fenders for example, are fair game. A report by web resource AutoMD.com cited what it called the top four myths of buying auto parts:

Crane will cause traffic troubles Monday

Crane will cause traffic troubles Monday

A very large construction crane will make its way through Germantown Monday, June 13.  The oversized load will enter the city around 10:30am to be delivered to the Wolf River Boulevard extension construction site near the intersection of Wolf River and Farmington.  The oversized load will originate from downtown Memphis.  The crane will have a police escort as it travels along the north loop of I-240 and then east on I-40.  The caravan will enter Germantown traveling south on Germantown Road, turn east on Wolf River, turn south on Kimbrough, then east on Farmington to the east end of the Wolf River Boulevard construction project.  Traffic delays are expected.  The load will make wide right turns at intersections.  On-street parking along Kimbrough and Farmington is discouraged Monday morning.

Bridge inspection could cause I-40 delays

Bridge inspection could cause I-40 delays

Commuters can expect delays as they travel the I-40 bridge over the Mississippi River for the next month.

The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department will started closing lanes this morning as part of the Hernando-DeSoto Bridge’s yearly inspection.

Road construction won’t delay Memorial Day travelers

Road construction won’t delay Memorial Day travelers

Road construction won’t slow motorists down as they travel Tennessee’s highways this Memorial Day weekend.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will suspend all construction-related lane closures on interstates and state routes beginning at noon on Friday, May 27 through 6 a.m. on Tuesday, May 31. This will provide maximum roadway capacity for motorists expected to travel in the state this Memorial Day weekend.

“Halting road construction during this busy holiday weekend will minimize congestion and delays on Tennessee’s interstates,” said Commissioner John Schroer. “We want to keep traffic flowing so everyone can have a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend.”

Drivers paying less for gas

Drivers paying less for gas

Gas is getting cheaper and that means there's a little less pain at the pump for Mid-Southerners this week.

AAA says this week drivers are paying 13 cents a gallon less in Memphis than they were last week. The average price in Memphis on May 17 was $3.75. Today, it’s $3.62 and experts say prices could fall another 5 cents before Memorial Day.

Why are they falling? Experts say there are a few reasons.

Public help wanted on new transportation plan

The Memphis Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization MPO is seeking input from Shelby County residents in the Mid-South on transportation system improvement. The MPO is inviting the public to attend several community meetings to give their opinions on ways to improve public transportation. These workshops are critical to the development of the long range transportation plan – Direction 2040.
