Dining With Monkeys: Steak ‘n Shake

Dining With Monkeys: Steak ‘n Shake

After spending the bulk of our day at the Wolfchase Galleria, we found ourselves dazed and confused--and hungry--at 3:15pm. I tried my best to rally Warren and the monkeys (Satchel, 8, Jiro 6) for a trip to Las Tortugas, but Warren complained it was too far away and that we'd have to deal with a ton of traffic. (He's just jealous of Senor Dreamy!) So, my next suggestion was Steak 'n Shake, solely because it was close and it reminds me of my own childhood. I told the monkeys about how I used to walk to the one near the JCC when I was little and they were amazed. "You mean they had Steak 'n Shakes all the way when you were little?" Satchel said. Then after thinking for a minute, he added, "Was that before it became a chain?" I don't know why, but that cracked me up.

When we arrived, I expected it to be dead since it was the middle of the afternoon, but it was packed and we came in with a rush. A man who stopped to hold the door open on his way out remarked, "Is there a church bus in the parking lot?"

Groundhog Day could mean free eats at Chick-fil-A

Groundhog Day could mean free eats at Chick-fil-A

It could be a double dose of good news Groundhog Day morning, if the groundhog predicts an early spring.

If the groundhog doesn't see his shadow, customers won't have to pay for a spicy chicken biscuit at Memphis and North Mississippi area Chick-fil-A restaurants.

The giveaway will be Wednesday, Feb. 2.

A portion of all sales from the Groundhog Day giveaway will be donated to MIFA.

Pastner replaces Calipari in the oddest places

My husband and I had a date night this weekend and we decided to go to Abner's Famous Chicken Tenders Restaurant in Cordova before heading to see a movie.  When I got into the restaurant, I noticed almost every wall is covered with sports memorabilia.  They have helmets, autographed photographs of coaches and large photographs from games.  There was a picture right over my husband's shoulder that I just had to take a picture of.  It's a picture of the Memphis Tigers Men's Basketball team with Coach John Calipari in the center.  As you can see from the photograph, someone has taken the liberty to cut out Josh Pastner's head and plant it right over Calipari's head.  I knew I just had to share this with my friends in My Neighborhood.

Corky’s helps homeless by smoking 100 turkeys

Cooking a traditional Thanksgiving meal for hundreds of homeless men and women doesn’t happen overnight.

In Memphis Union Mission’s case, it takes weeks of preparations and a little help from Corky’s Barbecue, who is lending a hand again this year by smoking all 100 turkeys that the Mission will be serving.

“What Corky’s does for us is a real blessing,” said Scott Bjork, president and CEO. “By smoking those turkeys for us, it makes preparations for our Thanksgiving banquet so much easier.”

But for the Mission, it isn’t just about efficiency.

Cordova diners come out to support "Bad Dog"

The folks in Cordova really turned out last night to help out a local disc jockey who has been on the Memphis airwaves for years.  John "Bad Dog" McCormack had a bone marrow transplant this week.  The Memphis radio icon is battling leukemia and the medical bills are piling up.

Last night, many local restaurants collected donations and also donated part of the day's proceeds to help pay Bad Dog's medical bills.  It was called "Dog Day" and the Cordova Huey's was part of the donation drive.

Bad Dog has helped raise millions of dollars to help cancer patients at St.
