Forum to be held for candiates seeking board of education seats in Lakeland

Partnership Lakeland will hold a forum for the Lakeland Board of Education candidates on Tuesday, October 16th. The forum will be held at the First Baptist Church of Lakeland at 4500 Canada Road and will begin at 6:30 p.m..  This event will introduce candidates for Lakeland’s first Board of Education and will allow the candidates the opportunity to tell voters about themselves and take questions from the audience.  For more information about Partnership Lakeland and the candidates, visit www.partnershiplakeland.org.

The University of Memphis is having a Presidential Watch, Debate and later Discuss tonight at the University of Memphis Rose Theatre from 7-10:30 p.m. for all students.

They ask for you to bring your cell phones and laptops to participate in polling before and after the debate.

Also, don't forget that the University of Memphis is having a student vote drive today on campus.

The University of Memphis is pushing to have 1,000 students register to vote. Deadline to register to vote is October 8.

Mayor Luttrell, Gov. Haslam, developing Japanese business relationships

(WMC-TV) - County Mayor Mark Luttrell and Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam are visiting Tokyo, Japan this week, exploring new business opportunities for Shelby County as well as the entire state of Tennessee.

The governor and mayor were joined by members of the Greater Memphis Chamber and 60 other state and local business officials.

“It’s been an exciting week,” said Mayor Luttrell.  “We’ve met with the CEOs of Mitsubishi Electric, Mitsubishi Chemical, Brother Industries, Sharp and other businesses. Our goal is to establish new relationships and encourage more companies to locate in our community,” he added.

In 2011, Mitsubishi broke ground on a new transformer manufacturing plant in Memphis, which should create approximately 300 full-time jobs.  The plant will also create opportunities for subcontractors.

Mayor Wharton to receive award

Mayor A C Wharton is scheduled to receive special honors at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, NC on Tuesday, the official opening day of the 2012 Democratic National Convention.

Wharton will receive the Susan Burgess Memorial Award from the board of directors of the Democratic Municipal Officials. The award is given annually to “an outstanding Democratic Municipal Official committed to improving public education.”

Luttrell to hold one-on-one meetings with citizens

(WMC-TV) – Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell will meet one-on-one with his constituents to hear what their concerns.

The first sessions will take place in the mayor’s office on the 8th floor of the Vasco Smith Administration Building, 160 N. Main, on July 10, from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.

Lakeland Referendum Vote to be Held May 10th

Any Lakeland resident who voted on Super Tuesday, should have received a pamphlet informing them of a vote on a referendum on May 10th to decide if Lakeland residents want to establish a Lakeland School System. The Lakeland Board of Commissioners are currently in the process of passing the resolution to hold the election. The actual wording to appear on the ballot is below.

Shall the City of Lakeland create a municipal school district that shall meet the standards of adequacy established by applicable State law and regulations, which standards include raising and spending each year the required amount of local fund for the operation of the municipal school district that, for calculation purposes only, would at least be equal to the amount that would be raised through a fifteen cents ($.15) tax levy on each One Hundred Dollars ($100.00) of taxable property for each year all such taxes were collected?

Invisible Children's #StopKony

Trending in Memphis this morning is a powerful anti-child abduction campaign by the non-profit organization, Invisible Children. A video published Monday, March 5, 2012 titled Kony2012 is causing a stir.       The 30 minute long documentary is a "film and campaign by Invisible Children that aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice" says Invisible Children, Inc.     Some groups accuse the organization of over-simplifying the problem.
