Adult Greek Language Class begins tonight

Adult Greek Language Class begins tonight

The dream of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. comes alive in an adult Greek class that begins on his national holiday today.

Have you ever thought of learning the Greek language and some Greek culture as well? You have a chance to tonight at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church in Memphis. Retired Priest Father Nicholas Vieron is beginning his Adult Greek tonight in the church hall at Sam Cooper and Highland in Memphis.

Father Vieron has been teaching his adult greek class for 40 years and always begins on Martin Luther King Day. Vieron is one of a few white ministers left from the 1968 struggle who manifested efforts for social justice led by the late Rabbi James Wax.

It's a 14 week course that meets once a week at the church

10 ways to protect your kids online

Personal security expert Robert Siciliano, contributor to FraudAvengers.org, offered 10 terrific tips to protecting your children's privacy and safety while they're online:

* NARROW DOWN DEVICES. Limit how many devices they have. The more they have, the more vulnerable they are to a hacker or predator.

* RECOGNIZE PREDATORY BEHAVIOR. "Kids will be kids, but that doesn't mean it's OK to say mean things, send racy pictures, make rude requests or suggest illegal behavior," Siciliano said. "If it isn't OK in the physical world, it isn't OK on the Internet."

* USE PARENTAL CONTROLS. Research and use the parental controls installed in the devices, and, if necessary, invest in parental control software.

Wal-Mart to Host Bike and Toy Drive

It is not too late to lend a helping hand to kids in need this holiday season.

A local Wal-Mart will host a toy and bike shopping spree for underprivileged children. But first, they must collect items for the children. The drive will start Wednesday, December 19 and end Saturday, December 22.

The drive will be held at the Wal-Mart located at 577 N. Germantown Parkway. It will start at 9 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. each day.

The items will be donated to children at The Neighborhood Christian Center, Samelson, and John Buckman Boys and Girls Club.  At this time, The Neighborhood Christian center still has around 800 kids that are in need this season.

This drive comes at a time when many need it most.

Lakelands annual Visit with Santa scheduled at the IH Clubhouse Saturday, December 8th

The Lakeland Lions Club and the City of Lakeland are inviting children to the annual “Visit with Santa” at the IH Clubhouse from 10 a.m. till noon on Saturday, December 8th.

Parents or grandparents will need to sign-in by writing the child’s name and what they are wearing. Participants are also encouraged to write something about their child (i.e. got an A in math, needs to pick-up toys), to make the experience personalized for each child.  A Lakeland volunteer will be in the area where the children cannot hear, and talk to Santa on a walkie-talkie, reading from the sign-in cards. Tables will be set-up so that children can color with crayons.

Don’t forget to bring your camera for pictures with Santa. For more information, visit www.lakelandtn.gov; or, contact Recreation Program Coordinator Joy Cloud at 867-5414 or jcloud@lakelandtn.org.
