Memphis fights hunger with summer program

Memphis fights hunger with summer program

Summer can be an exciting time – but for many children, summer can also mean hunger.

To address this need and support wellness among city youth, the City of Memphis created the program FUN - Fitness, Unity, Nutrition as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program.

"Hunger does not take a break and just as learning does not end with the dismissal of school, neither does a child’s need for nutrition", says Mayor A C Wharton, Jr.  "With summer right around the corner, it’s time to think about keeping Memphis children eating healthy during these months."

The program begins June 3 and runs through August 2, Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m to 12:30 p.m. at twenty three park sites throughout the city.

The long anticipated grand opening of the "H2Oh! Splash" spray park exhibit at the Children’s Museum of Memphis took place Memorial Day.

Admission to the spray park is separate from the admission fee to the museum. The park is also not included in museum membership since it is seasonal and will only be open about five months out of the year (approximately Memorial Day to Labor Day based on how hot it is).

The park will be open daily 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. based on weather conditions. Price for admission Monday – Thursday is $4 for members and $8 for non-members. Admission on Friday – Sunday will be $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Prices and hours are subject to change.
