Prison staff finds marijuana wrapped in Bible pages

A routine search of the cell block turned up contraband concealed in an anything but routine manner.

New Year's Day, deputies at the Shelby County Corrections Center conducting a routine search in 13 block of the main building found five small Bible pages balled up and stuffed under the mattress of lower bunk seven.

When they unwrapped the balled up Bible pages, they discovered a total of 2.81 grams of marijuana.

Investigators said the bible pages and the weed inside belonged to the inmate who sleeps in bunk six underneath, Cortez Goss.

Goss was originally imprisoned on an 8-year sentence for a 2008 aggravated robbery conviction.

In 2011, he was indicted for bringing contraband into a penal facility, for which he earned an additional two years in prison according to court records.

Now, he faces another criminal charge for bringing marijuana into the prison.
