MEMPHIS, TN (WMC-TV) - Memphis police continued their investigation Wednesday into the alleged rape of a 23-month-old child by three boys, ranging in age from 14 to 11-years-old.

Officials at Shelby County Juvenile Court said the three boys remain in court custody, charged with a crime that is rare.

"The more common charges that we see would be shoplifting and things like that," said Barry Mitchell, Chief Probation Officer at Shelby County Juvenile Court. "We see cases like this, but it would be more of the infrequent type cases that we see."

A 14-year old and two of his friends, ages 11 and 13, are charged with raping a 23-month-old girl. Memphis police said the incident happened around 10:30 Monday night in the 7900 of Ryan Cove in Cordova.  At the time, the toddler's parents were at work.

According to investigators, the three boys called police to report that they had been robbed while in an apartment.  But sex crime investigators later determined the story was fabricated by the boys.

Schnucks to close Cordova store

Action News 5 received the following from Schnucks:

CORDOVA, Tenn. - Scott C. Schnuck, chairman and chief executive officer of Schnuck Markets, Inc., today announced plans to close the Schnucks store located at 1150 North Germantown Parkway in Cordova, Tenn.  The final day of sales and the discontinuation of all programs and services will be Saturday, Aug. 28, at 6 p.m.  The fuel and convenience center will remain open.

"When we entered the Mid-South market in 2002, we focused on providing the very best in products and services to our Cordova customers and hoped that over time, sales would improve," said Schnuck.  "However, in eight years, the competitive challenges are much greater.  We are now facing increasing pressure from five competitors within a two-mile radius, including two supercenters.  In our experience, grocery options in Cordova have well exceeded demand."
