Memphis schools students must have online course

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Each Memphis City Schools student must take one online course to graduate.

The requirement began with this school year's freshmen, reports The Commercial Appeal.

1 of 112 students using the system to graduate early from Whitehaven High School is 17-year-old DeMarcus Oliver. He told the newspaper he's spending three or four hours each school night taking English IV - the only course he would need to take as a senior to graduate. By passing the course, Oliver will graduate in the spring of his junior year.

The city system offers 28 online classes for senior high students and 12 for middle schoolers.

School officials say the system is in its infancy. Some students are using it for early graduation while others are making up classes they didn't pass.

City inspection not required for newer cars

Memphians with newer cars can skip the city’s vehicle inspection lines starting Jan. 3.

Cars built between 2008 and 2011 were exempted from the inspection process by the city council earlier this year. Council members hope the move will cut wait times at the inspection centers.
